PAPAGENA™ – orange bedding floribunda rose - McGredy

Vividly striped PAPAGENA™ brings a touch of theatre to everyday front gardens, with orange and lemon blooms that create a constantly changing display from early summer onwards. This floribunda forms a tidy, upright bush with dense, glossy foliage, ideal where you want dependable colour without complex maintenance. Bred for strong disease resistance, it performs reliably in typical British conditions, even where wetter weather and strong winds demand good resilience. As an own-root rose it builds a durable framework over the years, recovering well from pruning and giving a long-lived presence in the garden – roots in the first year, top growth in the second, and full ornamental value by the third season.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Front garden focal point near the entrance Use PAPAGENA™ as a single specimen by the path or doorway to create an immediate focal point; the upright, bushy habit stays compact enough for narrow spaces while still giving continuous colour through the season, suiting homeowners who want impact with minimal upkeep for beginners
Small bedding groups (1–5 plants) in family gardens Planted in small drifts at 55 cm spacing, the floribunda clusters fill out into a coherent block of colour, giving a lively patterned effect that looks carefully designed yet is simple to manage across seasons for busy-owners
Mixed cottage-style border with perennials and herbs The striped orange and yellow flowers pair beautifully with sage, thyme and soft blues or mauves, adding structure and repetition while the own-root form gradually settles into a stable, well-shaped bush within informal plantings for cottage-lovers
Low-maintenance rose bed for long-term planting Strong resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust allows PAPAGENA™ to hold good foliage with relatively light spraying or none in many gardens, making it suitable for those aiming at a durable, low-intervention rose bed over many years for time-poor
Decorative hedge or row along a path or boundary At around 100–140 cm high and up to 95 cm wide, plants set about 50 cm apart form a loose, colourful hedge; the repeat flowering and tidy framework give a clear outline without demanding exacting pruning skills for home-gardeners
Large containers on patio or terrace (40–50 litres+) In a generously sized container of at least 40–50 litres with good drainage, this variety offers a long seasonal show close to seating areas; its moderate height and bushy habit remain in scale with pots while own-root vigour supports repeated regrowth for patio-owners
Partially shaded spots with morning or filtered sun PAPAGENA™ tolerates partial shade, so it suits side gardens or areas that receive only a few hours of sun, still producing reliable clusters of flowers if soil moisture is steady and watering is managed sensibly in drier spells for shade-gardeners
Exposed beds in typical British wind and rain The firm, medium-sized blooms and bushy framework cope well with unsettled weather, remaining presentable where heavier rain and wind might spoil floppier roses, making it a reassuring option in open, weather-prone suburban plots for UK-owners

Styling ideas

  • Doorstep welcome – Plant a single PAPAGENA™ by the front step with low creeping thyme at its feet for a smart yet romantic entrance – ideal for style-conscious homeowners.
  • Cottage ribbon – Run a short row along a path and weave in common sage and cypress spurge to echo classic cottage borders – perfect for lovers of traditional charm.
  • Patio showpiece – Grow in a 50-litre terracotta pot, underplanting with silver-leaved herbs to set off the orange-and-lemon flowers – suited to balcony and terrace gardeners.
  • Family bed – Combine 3–5 plants with soft pinks and blues for a cheerful, easy-care family border that looks good from the kitchen window – great for busy family gardens.
  • Colour echo – Repeat PAPAGENA™ at intervals through a mixed border so its striped blooms pick up warm tones from nearby perennials – ideal for beginners planning their first design.

Colour data and phenology Vivid orange petals with pure lemon-yellow stripes (RHS 28A outer, 14B inner); tones soften to pinkish orange and creamy yellow as blooms age, giving a constantly changing effect.
Fragrance and aroma Mild, fresh citrus fragrance; pleasantly noticeable at close range without dominating nearby plantings, making it suitable for seating areas and small front gardens.
Hip characteristics Occasional spherical hips, about 8–12 mm, orange-red in colour; formed sparsely because of the semi-double flower form, adding discreet late-season interest.
Resistance and winter hardiness Good resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust; hardy to around −21 to −18 °C (RHS H7, USDA 6b, Swedish Zone 3), suitable for most UK garden conditions.
Horticultural recommendations Suited to beds, specimen planting, hedging and large containers; spacing 55 cm in mass plantings or 90 cm as a specimen; prefers regular watering in prolonged dry spells.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
