Nozomi™ Groundcover NOZomi – pale pink ground-cover rose
This low, spreading rose creates a delicate carpet of pearly flowers, ideal for neat groundcover in family gardens where you want impact without complicated designs. Nozomi forms a dense, mid-green, glossy foliage mat that softens paths, rockeries and the front of borders, giving a relaxed cottage feel while keeping the overall look tidy. Its once-a-season flush of tiny shell-pink blooms appears in clusters, opening to almost white and then dropping cleanly, so the plant stays visually orderly with minimal deadheading. The shallow, spreading habit anchors well on gentle slopes, making it useful for covering awkward corners that are visible from the house. In sunnier, breezier gardens it copes well as long as you give it regular watering and simple, consistent disease care, even where constant humidity and rain can challenge roses. Own-root plants settle steadily and, as the seasons pass, build a long-lived, low shrub that needs only light shaping rather than complicated pruning. You will see roots establishing in the first year, more branching and coverage in the second, and by the third year a convincing, full ornamental carpet effect. Planted in open, sunny spots or large containers, its fine-textured growth works beautifully in small groups or ribbons along paths, providing structure for other perennials. With patient, regular care, this classic Japanese-bred rose offers durable charm and a subtly romantic presence close to everyday living areas.

Reasoning
Front-of-border groundcover strip
Nozomi’s low, spreading habit creates a soft, continuous carpet at the front of mixed borders, hiding bare soil and edging lawn or paving without needing formal clipping. The dense foliage mat delivers a long-lived, structural base that gradually knits together, ideal for busy front gardens wanting a gentle cottage feel with simple upkeep for beginners.
Path edging in family gardens
The miniature flowers and compact height make this rose excellent along paths where children pass, giving a fine-textured, pretty fringe without towering canes. Its good natural self-cleaning means most spent flowers drop on their own, so edging stays neat with little deadheading. As an own-root shrub it thickens slowly over years, forming a durable, low boundary appreciated by homeowners.
Rock garden and gravel planting
Planted among rocks or gravel, Nozomi spreads gently between stones, softening hard lines with its pale pink and white bloom clusters. The shallow, wide growth pattern suits thin, freer-draining soils often used in rock features, provided watering is monitored in hot spells. Over time, its own-root base regenerates well after winter, giving reliable coverage valued by collectors.
Gentle slopes and banks
The variety’s naturally spreading, mat-like structure helps to cloak small banks and gentle slopes, visually stabilising soil while remaining low enough for easy access. In exposed aspects it responds well as long as you give attentive watering and straightforward disease management in wetter, milder seasons, even where persistent rain and wind can be testing for roses and for gardners.
Small-group planting in front gardens
Groups of three to five plants produce a unified, cloud-like effect of tiny shell-pink blooms above glossy mid-green foliage, ideal for modest front gardens. Because it blooms in a concentrated flush, planning around its peak creates a strong seasonal highlight, then the foliage continues to provide an attractive green base. The own-root form ensures the grouping matures into a stable feature for design-conscious starters.
Large container and trough planting (40–50 litres+)
In generously sized pots or troughs from 40–50 litres upwards, Nozomi can cascade slightly over the rim, softening containers near doors, patios or drives. Good drainage and regular feeding are essential, but pruning can remain light, mainly thinning and tidying after flowering. With consistent care, the own-root plant re-sprouts reliably, making it a long-term container resident for busy urbanites.
Pollinator-friendly corners
The simple, open flowers with accessible stamens are naturally inviting to bees and other pollinators during the main flowering period. While the rose itself lacks strong fragrance, its structure allows you to underplant or combine with aromatic herbs, creating a lively, insect-friendly patch. This suits wildlife-aware householders who want subtle support for nature.
Cottage-style mixes with perennials and grasses
Nozomi’s fine leaves and tiny, pearl-pink flowers lend themselves to classic cottage-style pairings with foxgloves, low clematis and ornamental grasses, where its low height forms a calm base layer. After its main flush, the neat green carpet continues to frame summer perennials, so the border still looks composed. This is attractive for style-led gardeners seeking effortless-looking colour.
Styling ideas
COTTAGE RIBBON – Run a loose line of Nozomi along a front path, interspersed with foxgloves and airy campanulas, for a soft cottage edge – ideal for homeowners wanting romantic structure without tall shrubs.
ROCKY DRIFTS – Tuck small groups into a rock garden with low sedges and thyme, letting the foliage weave between stones – suited to gardeners who like naturalistic drifts in sunny, well-drained spots.
PASTEL CARPET – In a small bed, mass-plant Nozomi as a pale pink carpet beneath taller roses or small trees – perfect for those needing a low, long-lived understorey with minimal pruning choices.
CONTAINER CASCADE – Plant one or two in a 50-litre trough by the front door, combining with soft grasses and seasonal bulbs – good for busy urban gardeners wanting lasting structure in limited space.
WILDLIFE BORDER – Use Nozomi as a low filler with herbs and nectar plants so its open blooms complement bee-friendly companions – appealing to families aiming for a relaxed, wildlife-friendly front garden.
Technical cultivar profile
Aspect
Data
Name and registration
Ground-cover miniature rose from the Ground cover collection. Registered cultivar name NOZomi, marketed as Nozomi™ Groundcover NOZomi; ARS exhibition name Nozomi, meaning “hope” in Japanese.
Origin and breeding
Bred by Tōru Onodera in Japan, 1968, from cross ‘Fairy Princess’ × ‘Sweet Fairy’. Registered and introduced in 1968; original distributing nursery not recorded in available data.
Growth and structural characteristics
Low, spreading ground-cover habit, around 35–65 cm high and 80–160 cm wide, with dense, glossy mid-green foliage and moderate prickliness. Forms a mat-like shrub over time on its own roots.
Flower morphology
Tiny single to semi-single blooms, 0.5–1.5 inches across, carried in clusters. Each flower has around 5–12 petals, flat in form, and appears in a once-a-season, non-remontant flush.
Colour data and phenology
Pearlescent pale pink flowers; buds soft pink, almost white at tips. Newly opened petals shell-pink (RHS 62D outer, 65D inner), fading to near-white with a light cream tint and a delicate pink centre glow.
Fragrance and aroma
Fragrance is very weak and barely noticeable, with no specific scent profile recorded. Primarily chosen for its ground-cover structure and flower display rather than for perfume or aromatic garden use.
Hip characteristics
Rosehip production is usually sparse; occasional small, spherical orange-red hips 4–8 mm across may form. Hips are decorative only in a minor way and not a major ornamental feature of this cultivar.
Resistance and winter hardiness
Exceptionally hardy to around −32 to −29 °C (USDA 4b, RHS H7, Swedish Zone 5). Very susceptible to powdery mildew, black spot and rust, so requires regular preventative care, especially in damp climates.
Horticultural recommendations
Best in full sun with good air flow. High maintenance due to poor disease resistance; plan regular spraying and monitoring. Recommended for groundcover, edging, slopes, rock gardens and suitable large containers.
Nozomi™ Groundcover NOZomi offers a low, spreading carpet of pale pink bloom, neat self-cleaning foliage and long-lived own-root growth; consider it if you want a delicate groundcover rose and are prepared for regular disease care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
