MARBLED GALLICA – pink park rose - Scarman
For those who want a rose that rewards minimal effort, MARBLED GALLICA offers a tall, upright shrub with easy-care character and richly scented summer blooms that transform a front garden into a classic cottage-style feature. Its marbled pink flowers appear in impressive clusters, then the plant settles into a neat, leafy structure that anchors borders even in exposed, breezy sites with careful attention to moisture and drainage. Own-root planting means the shrub develops steadily, forming a long-lived, regenerative bush that copes well with typical family-garden routines. In partial shade or sun, it builds up year by year—roots first, then strong shoots, then full ornamental presence—until it becomes a reliable seasonal highlight. Medium maintenance needs and robust winter hardiness make it a reassuring choice if you want characterful colour, strong perfume and a rose that simply feels at home in your garden design.

Reasoning
Front-garden focal shrub
The upright, 160–240 cm habit lets this rose act as a vertical accent by a path or gate, giving a strong cottage feel in even a small front garden. The impressive, once-a-year flowering makes early summer a clear highlight without constant intervention, suiting the busy homeowner.
Seasonal flowering feature in mixed beds
Its medium-sized, marbled pink clusters create a striking seasonal show that combines easily with perennials and small shrubs, while the dense foliage continues to provide structure after flowering. You gain a reliable early-summer “event” without complicated pruning, ideal for the hobby gardener.
Lightly shaded side garden or passage
Because it tolerates partial shade, MARBLED GALLICA is well suited to side gardens, north-east aspects or spots screened by neighbouring houses, where many roses underperform. It still offers rich fragrance and colour, helping you use awkward spaces effectively as a practical beginner.
Low-input family border with classic character
Medium maintenance and own-root resilience mean you can keep care simple: annual pruning, occasional deadheading and basic feeding are generally sufficient. The tall, upright shrub gives depth and privacy in family borders without intensive shaping, appealing to the time-poor family.
Informal flowering hedge or screen
At 100 cm spacing, several plants form a loose, semi-formal screen, combining summer flower display with year-round leafy cover. Once established, pruning can be limited to height control and thinning, making a handsome boundary solution for the design-conscious owner.
Specimen rose in cottage-style compositions
The distinctive marbled pink colouring and very strong, sweet-fruity fragrance make an eye-catching specimen among foxgloves, campanulas and other traditional favourites. With own-root strength building from year one to year three, it becomes a long-term character plant for the cottage-garden lover.
Wind-exposed but sheltered-by-planting positions
Used with shrubs such as smoke bush or hydrangea, the upright framework helps knit together planting schemes that need to cope with blustery conditions while maintaining form and coverage, as long as soil is not waterlogged and moisture is managed with good attention to garden water conditions.
Collector’s or heritage-style rose corner
As a Gallica shrub with distinctive marbling and occasional decorative hips, it suits small rose collections or heritage-themed corners. Own-root growth supports longevity and renewal, so the planting matures into a stable, characterful feature for the enthusiast gardener.
Styling ideas
Cottage Duo – Pair MARBLED GALLICA with trailing bellflower and soft geraniums to underline its marbled blooms and strong scent in a relaxed, cottage-style front border – for lovers of traditional charm.
Structured Screen – Plant as a loose hedge with repeating shrubs and ornamental grasses to create a semi-formal, low-input screen that still feels soft and family friendly – for design-focused homeowners.
Shaded Approach – Use along a lightly shaded side path with shade-tolerant perennials so its fragrance and height guide you towards the house – for urban gardeners working with narrow plots.
Summer Showpiece – Give a single shrub pride of place in a small lawn island or corner bed, letting its once-a-year flowering mark the start of summer – for those who want one standout feature.
Heritage Corner – Combine with smoke bush and old-style perennials to echo traditional rose gardens, making a low-maintenance but characterful heritage nook – for collectors and history enthusiasts.
Technical cultivar profile
Parameter
Data
Name and registration
Marbled Gallica – shrub rose in the Park – shrub rose group, marketed as MARBLED GALLICA – pink park rose - Scarman; ARS exhibition name Marbled Gallica; registered name not recorded.
Origin and breeding
Bred by John Scarman at Landhaus Ettenbühl, Germany; parentage unknown. Introduced by Scarman Roses in 1999 as a Gallica-type shrub rose suitable for garden and park use.
Growth and structural characteristics
Strong, upright shrub reaching roughly 160–240 cm in height with a 90–150 cm spread. Dense, mid-green, slightly glossy foliage and moderate prickliness give a full, bushy effect even after flowering.
Flower morphology
Medium-sized, double, cupped flowers with approximately 26–39 petals, carried in clusters on the stems. Blooms once per season rather than repeating, giving a concentrated early-summer display.
Colour data and phenology
Delicately marbled pink flowers, outer petals RHS 62C, inner 64A. Newly opened blooms show vivid crimson-pink veining; colour fades gradually to pastel pink and mauve tones, with very good overall colour retention.
Fragrance and aroma
Very strong, sweet, fruity fragrance, clearly noticeable from a distance in still air. Highly decorative rather than pollinator-oriented due to the full, double form that largely conceals the stamens.
Hip characteristics
Occasional, ovoid hips 10–16 mm in diameter, orange-red (RHS 40A). Hips add a modest seasonal accent after flowering but are not typically produced in heavy quantities on every plant.
Resistance and winter hardiness
Hardy to around –32 to –29 °C (USDA zone 4b, RHS H7, Swedish zone 5). Disease resistance is moderate to powdery mildew, black spot and rust; regular monitoring and basic care are recommended.
Horticultural recommendations
Best planted 100–110 cm apart in beds or hedges, or 180 cm as a specimen. Tolerates partial shade and moderate heat; prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil and benefits from periodic deadheading and pruning.
MARBLED GALLICA offers tall, structural flowering, powerful fragrance and own-root longevity in an easy-going shrub rose, making it a thoughtful choice if you want characterful colour with straightforward care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
