Lions-Rose® MärchenRosen® – cream-white floribunda bed rose

Easy-care Lions-Rose® settles quickly into typical British family gardens, giving reliable flowering with minimal fuss, even where soil is heavy and rain and wind demand good resilience and drainage-conscious planting. Its bushy, compact habit and dense dark foliage create a neat, formal look in small beds, front gardens and along paths, while the double, cup-shaped blooms offer soft, creamy-white colour from early summer onwards. As an own-root rose it builds strength steadily for a long garden lifespan, coping well with urban conditions and partial shade around the house. With patient, basic care it follows a natural rhythm of Year 1 rooting, Year 2 stronger shoots, and by Year 3 full ornamental impact.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Front garden focal bed The compact, bushy habit stays within its height and spread, creating a tidy, formal front bed without constant clipping. Clustered blooms cover the plant in creamy-white, so even a small group quickly looks full and composed, ideal when you want structure without complex planting plans – well suited to the aesthetic priorities of the busy-beginner.
Cottage-style mixed border Reliable repeat flowering ensures soft waves of bloom through the season, weaving gently among perennials and cottage favourites. Its generous second flush means gaps are quickly refilled after deadheading, keeping borders colourful for months with only basic care, giving confidence to the flower-lover.
Low-maintenance family garden bed Good disease resistance and self-cleaning flowers reduce spraying and deadheading, so plants remain attractive even when time is short. The foliage holds well and stays glossy, keeping the bed looking cared-for between weekend garden sessions, which is reassuring for the time-pressed.
Long-term structure around the house As an own-root plant it forms a stable, balanced bush that regenerates well after pruning or harsh winters, supporting a long ornamental lifespan. Once established, it anchors the planting and needs only modest annual trimming, suiting the long-view of the homeowner.
Urban and street-facing plantings Proven tolerance of urban conditions and good overall resilience mean it copes well with reflected heat, pollution and variable watering. In exposed front gardens it stands up to blustery weather that calls for thoughtful drainage and protection from persistent wind and rain, offering reliability to the city-gardener.
Part-shaded borders and side paths Suitable for partial shade, it flowers steadily in positions that receive only a few hours of sun, such as east- or west-facing strips along the house. This widens the range of spots where you can achieve classic rose colour without specialist knowledge, easing decisions for the shade-challenged.
Containers and large pots The compact growth and bushy framework adapt well to generous containers of at least 40–50 litres, where roots have space to develop over several years. In big pots by doors or on patios, regular watering and feeding are straightforward, rewarding even modest care with dependable bloom for the balcony-owner.
Small group plantings and low hedging Recommended planting distances allow you to create short, low hedges or rhythmical groups that read as a continuous band of creamy-white colour. The uniform habit means plants knit together neatly, so simple, repeated layouts look designed without requiring expert setting-out skills, helping the design-conscious.

Styling ideas

  • Front-Garden Ribbon – Line a narrow bed along a front path with Lions-Rose® and low blue fescue for a calm cream-and-steel palette – ideal for owners wanting a crisp, modern take on classic roses.
  • Cottage-Drift Mix – Combine small groups of Lions-Rose® with airy pink gypsophila and soft catmint to give relaxed, cottage-style drifts – perfect for those who like romantic borders without high upkeep.
  • Urban-Patio Trio – Plant three shrubs in a single 50-litre container, underplanted with trailing thyme, to create a resilient focal point on a paved courtyard – suited to city gardeners with limited soil.
  • Light-Shade Border – Use Lions-Rose® under light, high tree canopies with white verbena and shade-tolerant grasses for dappled elegance – good for gardeners making the most of part-shaded plots.
  • Neighbour-Friendly Hedge – Form a low, repeating hedge along the front boundary, softened with lavender at the base, to frame the house in gentle colour – appealing to families wanting order and welcome combined.

Technical cultivar profile
TraitData
Name and registration Floribunda bed rose from the MärchenRosen® collection; registered as KORvanaber, marketed as Lions-Rose® and accepted by the American Rose Society under the same exhibition name.
Origin and breeding Bred by Tim-Hermann Kordes (Germany), 1999, from Bernstein-Rose® × Nirvana®; introduced by W. Kordes’ Söhne in 2002 as a robust, garden-worthy floribunda for beds and borders.
Awards and recognition ADR German national trial 2002; Gold Standard and Rose of the Year in the United Kingdom 2006; Certificate of Merit The Hague 2005; multiple European silver and second prizes for garden performance.
Growth and structural characteristics Bushy, compact shrub 70–90 cm high and 50–70 cm wide, with dense, glossy dark green foliage and moderate thorns; forms a well-branched framework that suits low hedging, beds and mixed plantings.
Flower morphology Double, cup-shaped flowers, typically 26–39 petals, borne in clusters on strong stems; large-flowered (around 7–10 cm), repeat-blooming with a generous second flush after the main early-summer display.
Colour data and phenology Cream-white blooms with a soft peach-toned centre at opening, fading towards near white; RHS 155D outer and 20D inner; colour holds well in sun, with slow lightening and occasional delicate greenish edging.
Fragrance and aroma Mild, delicately sweet perfume typical of subtle garden floribundas; fragrance is present but not overpowering, making it suitable for seating areas and entrances where a gentle scent is preferred.
Hip characteristics Limited hip set due to double flowers; when present, produces small, spherical orange-red hips 8–12 mm in diameter, adding discreet late-season interest without dominating the plant’s display.
Resistance and winter hardiness Good overall health with resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust; reliably hardy to about −26 to −23 °C (RHS H7, USDA 5b), with solid performance in exposed and colder UK regions.
Horticultural recommendations Low-maintenance bed and border rose needing minimal pruning and feeding; thrives in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade; recommended spacing 35–65 cm depending on use and planting density.

Lions-Rose® MärchenRosen® offers easy-care flowering, a compact, reliable habit and a long own-root lifespan, making it a thoughtful choice for gardeners seeking durable elegance in everyday beds and borders.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
