Eddie's Jewel – red wild shrub rose
Natural single flowers in a deep ruby-red display make Eddie’s Jewel an easy-going choice for relaxed, wildlife-friendly family gardens, especially where breezy, rain-prone conditions demand reliably sturdy roses that cope well with exposed weather. Its tall, upright habit creates a graceful park-style presence in front or back gardens, while the almost thornless stems stay family-friendly around paths and play areas. Once-flowering clusters produce a generous show in early summer, followed by masses of vivid red hips that bring seasonal interest and winter structure for years. As an own-root shrub it settles in steadily and responds well to simple hedge-style pruning, suiting gardeners who prefer low-intervention care. Think of it as a long-term feature: roots in the first year, stronger shoots in the second, and fully developed ornamental impact by the third – a quietly dependable investment for traditional cottage and front-garden planting with a naturalistic character.

Usage options
Target area
Reasoning
Front garden focal shrub
Eddie’s Jewel forms a tall, upright shrub that quickly reads as a feature plant, giving strong summer colour and winter hips without fussy shaping, ideal where you want presence near the house with little ongoing input for the beginner
Informal flowering hedge
Planted at hedge spacing, its natural, upright habit and moderate density build a loose, informal screen that needs only occasional thinning rather than precise clipping, making a country-hedge feel that suits the time-pressed homeowner
Pollinator-friendly wildlife corner
The single, open flowers offer easy access to stamens and are particularly attractive to bees and other insects, supporting a wildlife-friendly corner that combines seasonal beauty with genuine ecological value for the nature-lover
Rose with decorative hips for autumn–winter interest
After flowering, the clusters of spent blooms mature into abundant, bright red bottle-shaped hips, extending the display well into winter and providing structure and colour when other perennials have faded, rewarding the patient gardener
Low-prickle family path-side planting
With barely thorny shoots, this shrub is far easier to live with beside paths or play areas than many roses, reducing snagging on clothing and making simple pruning and tying-in less daunting for the cautious beginner
Park-style specimen in lawn or mixed border
Its park rose heritage shows in the bold, self-assured outline that looks at home as a solitary specimen or rising behind herbaceous borders, giving a mature, designed feel without intricate maintenance to the style-conscious owner
Rugged choice for exposed or breezy plots
This tall shrub holds its flowers and hips well in open, windy spots, remaining visually coherent through unsettled weather and offering a reliable backbone where more delicate roses might struggle, which reassures the coastal-plot gardener
Own-root long-term structural rose
As an own-root shrub it builds its framework in place, regenerating from the base over time rather than relying on a graft, so it settles into its soil and climate with stable form and longevity, suiting the long-view planner
Styling ideas
COTTAGE HEDGE – run a loose line of Eddie’s Jewel along a front boundary, underplanted with low euonymus and catmint for a soft, informal hedge – ideal for cottage-style front-garden owners
WILDLIFE CORNER – combine with single-flowered perennials and lavender to create a pollinator-friendly pocket where its open blooms and hips provide food and shelter – perfect for nature-focused families
LAWNSIDE FEATURE – set one shrub in a small lawn circle with a simple ring of white gypsophila for a calm park-style island bed – suited to homeowners wanting easy yet grown-up structure
HIP DISPLAY – plant in a mixed shrub border with autumn-colouring companions so the vivid red hips read strongly against seasonal foliage – good for gardeners who value winter interest
LOW-PRICKLE WALKWAY – line a secondary path with well-spaced shrubs and airy annual lobelia, gaining height and colour without aggressive thorns – useful for families seeking safer, low-maintenance routes
Technical cultivar profile
Parameter
Data
Name and registration
Eddie's Jewel is a wild-type park shrub rose, marketed as a red wild rose for garden and landscape use; ARS exhibition name Eddie’s Jewel, commercial name Eddie's Jewel – Park shrub rose Eddie.
Origin and breeding
Bred by J. H. Eddie in Canada from ‘Donald Prior’ × Rosa moyesii hybrid, introduced and registered in 1962 by H. M. Eddie and Sons Nursery as a vigorous park and garden shrub.
Growth and structural characteristics
Tall, upright shrub reaching about 210–310 cm in height and 150–220 cm spread, moderately dense matt medium-green foliage, few prickles, and a natural, largely self-supporting outline.
Flower morphology
Small, flat, single flowers with around 5–12 petals in clusters, once-flowering rather than remontant, with weak self-cleaning so spent blooms usually persist and develop into decorative hips.
Colour data and phenology
Rich ruby-red flowers with high saturation; buds dark ruby, opening bright flame-red, then deepening through carmine to dark maroon, with very good colour retention and minimal visible fading.
Fragrance and aroma
Floral fragrance of very weak intensity, often barely noticeable in normal garden use, so the ornamental appeal focuses on colour, form, and hips rather than strong scent.
Hip characteristics
Produces abundant vivid red, bottle-shaped hips about 15–25 mm in diameter, forming from retained spent blooms and providing persistent autumn and winter ornamental interest and wildlife value.
Resistance and winter hardiness
Rated to around -21 to -18 °C with RHS H7 hardiness and Swedish Zone 3; disease resistance is moderate to powdery mildew, black spot, and rust, benefitting from basic preventative care.
Horticultural recommendations
Suited to parks, hedges, and specimens at 110–205 cm spacing; tolerates partial shade, prefers simple formative pruning, and fits large containers from about 40–50 litres for structural planting.
Eddie's Jewel offers natural single red flowers, abundant winter hips and a tall, long-lived own-root shrub form that rewards steady care over many years, making it a thoughtful choice for relaxed family gardens.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
