BARIRE® – purple-yellow bedding floribunda rose - Barni
Magenta blooms of BARIRE® bring a bright, classic bedding rose look to compact family gardens, pairing reliably with cottage-style perennials and coping well in exposed, coastal spots with good drainage and regular care. Its bushy, mid-height habit builds up steadily from own-root, creating neat, low hedges or front-of-border ribbons that are easy to read from the house or pavement. Expect a clear development from strong roots in year one, fuller shoots and shape in year two, and confident flowering with stable ornamental value by year three. The vivid, semi-double flowers deliver a colourful display over repeated flushes in summer, with a sweet, strong fragrance that stands out near paths, patios and windows. Well-prepared soil, particularly on heavier clay, and consistent feeding keep this variety vigorous, while its own-root nature allows gradual regeneration and a long-lived, balanced bush structure in a typical British garden.

Reasoning
Front-of-house flower bed beneath windows
The bushy, compact habit and medium height make this cultivar ideal under front windows where you want structure without blocking light; repeated summer flowering provides a consistent, tidy view from indoors and the pavement, appealing to appearance-conscious beginners.
Small mixed border with perennials
Its vivid magenta-pink and yellow-toned reverses blend well with silvers and soft greens, pairing attractively with lamb’s ear or lady’s mantle in classic cottage-style mixes while the own-root shrub gradually knits into a cohesive, long-lived border for style-focused homeowners.
Low informal hedge along paths or drives
Recommended closer planting distances suit short, low hedging that frames garden paths or drives; regular clipping is optional, as the natural bushy habit creates a soft, defined edge that matures steadily over the years for practical, boundary-marking gardeners.
Sunny raised bed in heavier clay soil
Planting into a raised or improved bed over clay gives the roots the drainage they need, supporting steady growth and repeat flowering even in wetter regions, while the sturdy framework holds its shape in breezy conditions for weather-aware planners.
Fragrant seating area near patio or terrace
The strong, sweet damask scent is best appreciated close up, so planting a small group near seating or a terrace offers a noticeable perfume on still evenings, adding sensory value without complex care routines for time-poor urban residents.
Feature group of 3–5 plants in a small bed
Grouped planting at the suggested spacing creates a dense block of colour that reads as a single feature from the street, while own-root growth ensures the clump thickens and endures over seasons with straightforward pruning for design-conscious starters.
Large container on a sunny hardstanding
In a generously sized container of at least 40–50 litres with quality compost, this variety offers a controllable, movable splash of colour and fragrance, well suited to paved front gardens or courtyards where in-ground planting is limited for balcony and patio owners.
Sunny, sheltered spot in coastal gardens
With moderate heat tolerance and a preference for sun, it performs well in milder coastal locations provided the soil is free-draining and watering is reliable during prolonged dry spells, supporting stable flowering despite wind and humidity for seaside gardeners.
Styling ideas
Cottage-Ribbon – run a soft line of BARIRE® along the front of a border, interspersed with lady’s mantle and low catmint for a frothy cottage feel – ideal for romantic style-lovers.
Window-Framing – plant a neat row beneath a front window with gravel mulch, letting the bushy shape and repeated magenta-pink blooms frame the façade – suited to neat, low-maintenance seekers.
Clay-Companion – in improved, raised beds over clay, combine with feather reed grass and lamb’s ear for contrast of form and foliage – good for structurally minded gardeners.
Patio-Perfume – place a trio in a large container near seating so the strong damask scent and vivid colour lift evening use of the space – perfect for small-terrace owners.
Front-Garden-Focus – create a compact island bed of 5 plants on a lawned front garden to form a simple, striking focal point – designed for busy families wanting impact.
Technical cultivar profile
Characteristic
Data
Name and registration
Floribunda bed rose; registered as BARire, marketed as Barire® Bedding rose BARire, exhibition name Irene; belongs to the bedding rose collection and is used mainly as a shrub floribunda.
Origin and breeding
Bred by Vittorio Barni in Pistoia, Italy and introduced by Rose Barni in 1999; parentage is not recorded, but it reflects classic European bedding-rose selection of the late twentieth century.
Growth and structural characteristics
Bushy shrub reaching about 70–95 cm in height with a 50–70 cm spread; moderately dense, dark green, slightly glossy foliage and moderate prickliness create a compact, well-filled bedding or edging plant.
Flower morphology
Semi-double, medium-sized clustered blooms, typically 13–25 petals, cup-shaped and remontant; after the first flush it produces a second abundant flowering, giving good seasonal continuity in well-managed plantings.
Colour data and phenology
Vivid magenta-pink with a yellowish reverse; ARS mp, RHS 58C outer, 58B inner; colour holds well in sun, lightening only slightly to paler pink tones towards the end of each bloom’s life.
Fragrance and aroma
Strong, long-lasting perfume with a distinct sweet damask character; best appreciated near paths, doors or seating areas where moderate air movement carries the scent without dispersing it too quickly.
Hip characteristics
Rose-hip production is generally low due to semi-double flowers; when present, hips are small, spherical, orange-red and about 6–9 mm in diameter, adding modest late-season interest.
Resistance and winter hardiness
Hardy to approximately −21 to −18 °C (H7, USDA 6b); disease resistance is modest with particular sensitivity to powdery mildew and rust, requiring regular monitoring, hygiene and treatment in humid or high-pressure areas.
Horticultural recommendations
Prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil; space at 35–65 cm depending on use, with about 5.7–6.6 plants/m² for bedding; plan for a preventative spray regime and consistent watering in extended dry periods.
BARIRE® offers compact bedding structure, rich colour and strong damask fragrance on a dependable own-root framework that settles in for long-term, straightforward enjoyment, making it a thoughtful choice if you value impact with manageable care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
