ALBA – white groundcover rose - Meilland

Groundcover roses like Alba Meillandina® give you a broad, low carpet of bloom that fits perfectly into small British gardens, coping well with breezy, coastal-influenced sites and changeable weather. Its snow-white, very double flowers appear in generous clusters, then drop their petals neatly, keeping beds looking orderly with very little deadheading. As a pharmaROSA® ORIGINAL own-root plant, it develops a naturally balanced bush that matures steadily for a long garden life, roots in the first year, builds structure in the second, and delivers full ornamental impact by the third. Dense, glossy dark green foliage sets off the bright white pompon blooms, bringing classic cottage charm to front gardens, paths and edging. Better suited to sunny spots than deep shade, it works equally well in the ground or in larger containers, forming a spreading, low-maintenance border that is easy to shape and refresh over time, ideal when you want reliable flowering without complex garden care.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Low-maintenance white groundcover in front gardens The broad, spreading habit quickly covers soil with dense, dark green foliage and masses of white pompon blooms, suppressing weeds and reducing visible bare patches, ideal when you want tidy frontage without frequent gardening – perfect for the busy homeowner.
Classic edging along drives and paths Its relatively low height and self-cleaning flowers keep path edges looking fresh with minimal deadheading, while the pure white colour reads clearly from a distance and suits both traditional and modern houses – well suited to the style-conscious beginner.
Small groups in cottage-style mixed borders Planted in groups of 3–5, the snow-white clusters knit together into a soft carpet that sits beautifully among perennials and grasses, giving a unifying base without overpowering more delicate plants – a good choice for the cottage-garden lover.
Sunny bank and slope planting The broad, ground-hugging framework helps to stabilise sloping beds, while own-root plants anchor firmly over time, forming a durable, long-lived cover that is easier to manage than many shrubs – reassuring for the practical gardener.
Large containers and patio planters In 40–50 litre or larger pots, its compact flowering trusses and controlled height create a neat dome of white, with petals dropping cleanly so the container rarely looks untidy, suiting patios where you entertain – ideal for the urban balcony-owner.
White accent in small family beds The unscented, heavily double flowers offer visual impact without overwhelming fragrance, giving a calm white focal point that blends easily with children’s play spaces and seating areas in modest gardens – attractive to the young family.
Simple, low-effort front-garden schemes Moderate maintenance needs and medium disease resistance make it manageable in well-ventilated, sunny sites; in more enclosed, humid spots you can plan light protection measures while still enjoying reliable flowering – helpful for the time-pressed owner.
Refined monochrome or pastel planting themes The stable, cool white flowers with very good colour retention partner elegantly with silver foliage and soft pastels, creating a serene, “in harmony with nature” look that endures across the season even in breezy, rain-washed conditions – perfect for the design-focused gardener.

Styling ideas

  • Frontage Ribbon – run a low band of Alba Meillandina® along the front boundary, underplanted with lamb’s ear for contrasting texture – suited to neat front-garden traditionalists.
  • Cottage Carpet – plant loose drifts of three plants among campanulas and soft grasses to build a white, flowering carpet – ideal for relaxed cottage-style enthusiasts.
  • Patio Focus – use one plant in a 50 litre terracotta pot by the back door, paired with trailing bellflowers to soften the rim – good for small-terrace and balcony owners.
  • Slope Softener – stagger plants on a sunny bank with kousa dogwood behind to tie upper and lower levels together – helpful for gardens with awkward level changes.
  • Monochrome Calm – team its cool white blooms with grey foliage and pale blue perennials for a restrained, evening-friendly border – appealing to lovers of serene, minimalist schemes.

Technical cultivar profile
ParameterData
Name and registration Groundcover rose from the Meillandina® collection; registered as MEInabron, marketed as Alba Meillandina® / Alba Meillandina, an exhibition mini rose for garden and show use.
Origin and breeding Bred by Marie-Louise Meilland in France from complex hybrid parentage including MEIdonq, Darling and Jack Frost; bred 1985, registered 1989, introduced commercially after 1989.
Growth and structural characteristics Broadly spreading, ground-cover habit, about 90–150 cm high and 135–225 cm wide; dense, glossy dark green foliage and moderate prickles produce a full, ground-hugging shrub.
Flower morphology Very double, ball to pompon-shaped blooms with over 40 petals, borne in clusters on short stems; small flower size (0.5–1.5 in), repeating strongly with abundant second flush.
Colour data and phenology Pure snow-white flowers (ARS w, RHS 155C–155D) from bud to fall; colour holds very well with only slight fading, giving a consistently bright white effect across the flowering season.
Fragrance and aroma No noticeable scent; predominantly a visual ornamental rose, as the very double blooms enclose stamens and offer limited value for pollinators compared with simpler flower forms.
Hip characteristics Produces small, spherical red hips around 6–10 mm when spent blooms are left; ornamental effect is modest and usually secondary to the plant’s extended flowering display.
Resistance and winter hardiness Rated H7 and hardy to about −32 to −29 °C (USDA 4b, Swedish zone 5); medium resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust, best performance in open, sunny, airy positions.
Horticultural recommendations Suited to sunny beds, groundcover, edging and large containers; prefers open sites over enclosed, humid courtyards where preventive plant protection and good airflow are advisable.

Alba Meillandina® offers broad, weed-suppressing groundcover, neat self-cleaning white blooms and long-lived own-root reliability, making it a sound, low-effort choice for many UK family gardens.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
