ALASKA® – cream-white climbing rose - Kordes

With its tall, graceful canes and cream-white blooms, ALASKA® Klettermaxe® offers a refined way to dress walls, arches and pergolas in smaller British gardens, even where wind and wet weather need careful planting and drainage. The large, very double flowers open in softly pearly clusters, combining a cut-rose elegance with the charm of a cottage-style climber, while the restrained, sweet fragrance makes it easy to live with around doors, seating areas and windows. Remontant flowering keeps the display reliable through the season, and its proven hardiness and own-root vigour support a long life in family gardens as the plant gradually builds up a stable framework of canes. In its first years the emphasis is on rooting, then stronger shoots, before reaching full ornamental value by about the third season, giving you lasting confidence without complex care.

ALASKA® shows slightly glossy, medium-green foliage.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Front-garden arch or porch entrance Ideal where you want an inviting, tidy entrance with classic creamy-white flowers that frame the doorway without overwhelming a small space; the manageable mature height works well for standard metal or wooden arches and simple training, suiting front-garden owners.
South- or west-facing house wall Suited to sunny, warmed walls where its remontant flowering keeps colour at eye level for much of the season; own-root growth forms a long-lived, well-anchored framework that copes with typical British rain and wind when given decent soil preparation, appealing to busy homeowners.
Small pergola or sitting-area structure The medium vigour allows you to clothe a modest pergola or gazebo without creating a thicket; repeat flushes of flowers and the mild, sweet scent give a calm backdrop to outdoor seating, especially welcome for relaxed gardeners.
Mid-sized boundary fence or trellis A good option where you need soft screening rather than a tall, overpowering climber; the moderately dense, glossy foliage and long flowering season maintain structure and colour while remaining relatively easy to prune back, matching family gardens.
Specimen feature in a cottage-style mixed border Works beautifully as a vertical accent among traditional perennials such as bearded irises, verbena and low gypsophila, with the refined flower form adding a cut-rose note to an otherwise informal planting, inspiring cottage-style enthusiasts.
Low-maintenance pair by a garden gate Planted as a mirrored pair, it creates a balanced gateway without constant shaping; own-root plants gradually settle into a stable habit, so once trained to simple supports they mainly need light seasonal pruning, ideal for time-poor beginners.
Large container on terrace (with support) Can be grown in a substantial 40–50 litre container with a strong obelisk or trellis, giving those with paved or courtyard spaces a vertical rose display; regular watering and feeding are the main tasks, manageable for urban gardeners.
Rose and cut-flower corner of the garden The long, high-centred, clustered blooms lend themselves to cutting while leaving enough buds on the plant for a continuing show; remontant flowering and good colour retention give a steady supply of stems for home florists.

Styling ideas

  • Porch-frame romance – Train ALASKA® each side of a cottage-style porch, underplanting with lavender and hardy geraniums for a soft, scented welcome – ideal for front-garden owners seeking easy elegance.
  • Cream-on-green pergola – Let its cream-white clusters drape a compact pergola, with ferns and hostas beneath for cool contrast and low maintenance – suited to busy gardeners wanting a calm seating area.
  • Cottage border accent – Combine this climber with bearded iris, Verbena hastata ‘Pink Spires’ and airy gypsophila to create vertical focus in an informal border – perfect for lovers of classic cottage mixes.
  • Courtyard statement pot – Grow in a 40–50 litre container with a slim obelisk, adding soft grasses and white violas around the base – a good choice for small-terrace and balcony gardeners.
  • Light boundary screen – Space plants along a simple trellis to soften fences with flowers rather than solid hedging, pairing with evergreen shrubs for year-round structure – designed for family gardens needing gentle privacy.

Technical cultivar profile
Parameter Data
Name and registration Large-flowered climbing rose from the Klettermaxe® collection; registered as KORjoslio, marketed as Alaska® Klettermaxe® KORjoslio; exhibition name “Future”.
Origin and breeding Bred by Tim-Hermann Kordes (Germany) in 2005 from ‘Moonlight’ × unnamed seedling; introduced by W. Kordes’ Söhne in 2014 with EU PBR in 2014 and a US plant patent in 2017.
Awards and recognition Highly awarded climber: Certificat de Mérite at Bagatelle, Paris (2014); Gold Medals at Kortrijk and La Tacita (Best Climber); first prizes at Lyon and Baden bei Wien; Best Climber, Belfast (2018).
Growth and structural characteristics Climbing habit with moderately dense, medium-green, slightly glossy foliage; height typically 180–280 cm with 80–160 cm spread; moderately thorny canes and medium self-cleaning of spent blooms.
Flower morphology Very double, high-centred, pointed-budded blooms in clusters; large flower size (approximately 7–10 cm), with reliable remontant flowering that produces a strong second flush under good garden conditions.
Colour data and phenology Cream-white base colour with a delicate pink tint on outer petals; buds show ivory with a pink veil; colour holds very well, fading only slightly to pearly or milky white during the bloom’s lifespan.
Fragrance and aroma Subtle, delicately sweet fragrance of mild intensity; designed primarily for ornamental effect rather than strong scent, making it suitable near doors, windows and seating where overpowering perfume is undesirable.
Hip characteristics Rosehip production is generally low due to the very double flowers; where formed, small spherical orange-red hips of roughly 7–11 mm diameter may appear in late season without strong visual impact.
Resistance and winter hardiness Rated H7 with approximate hardiness to around -21 °C; tolerates heat and moderate drought well; disease resistance is medium for mildew, black spot and rust, benefitting from standard preventative care.
Horticultural recommendations Best in sunny positions on walls, arches or pergolas, with spacing of 140–240 cm depending on use; plant at about 0.4–0.5 plants/m² in structural schemes and provide regular tying-in and light seasonal pruning.

ALASKA® Klettermaxe® offers refined cream-white clusters, reliable repeat flowering and lasting structure on its own roots, making it a thoughtful choice if you want a graceful, long-term climbing feature with manageable care.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
